If I get 6,380,000 results on Google when I search on "Arthur Conan Doyle", and 37,800,000 when I search on "Bob Dylan" I can sure tell who probably influences more people at this point in time.

The sad thing about it all is that America is such an entertainment-driven country, and litterature is getting shoved to the side much of the time. To a lot of the younger generation books are "old technology". I bet you could walk up to a random 18 yr old kid on the street and say "Arthur Conan Doyle" to them and all they'll give you is the "wha??" stare.

Now Bob Dylan -- everyone has heard of him, and I think you could almost say truthfully that everyone has heard him (his music). Bob Dylan wrote over 35 albums worth of music over a period of 40 years (So far).

Conan Doyle's first writings were published in 1879 and he continued writing till at least the mid 20s (he died July 8, 1930). Which means, of course, around 40 years of publication.

But I don't think years will tell us who was more of an influence.

I read on the web that at one point in Conan Doyle's life, he had 2 million believers in a movement that he called "spiritualism". He was good friends with James M. Barrie (writer of Peter Pan), and greatly influenced Barrie with his life. Conan Doyle also gained popularity by helping George Edalji, a man who was falsely accused of a crime, regain his good name.

But Dylan is called "the central architect of the 60s folk-rock movement". Think of how many people listened to his rock and roll back in the 60s. That music is still popular! Bob has also written more and more music since then...people are still listening to Bob music. I think the answer to the question is Bob.
